The legal profession has long understood the moral imperative that law schools, and the attorneys they produce, need to be as diverse as the clients they serve.
For more than two decades, in-house counsel, together with progressive leaders on the bench and in private practice, have made it a top priority to improve racial, ethnic, and gender diversity in the legal profession.
Despite these efforts, the diversity pipeline needs to be strengthened.
In 2006, we created the Law Preview Diversity Scholars Program, a partnership with leading law firms, Fortune 500 companies and law schools that prepares diverse incoming first-year law students with an intensive 48-hour law school prep course at no charge. In 2021, Law Preview partnered with thirty-six of the world’s largest law firms and companies to award scholarships to diverse students attending 80 of the nation’s top law schools.
More than 1,500 diverse entering law students applied for a scholarship and 745 were ultimately selected. While preparing 745 diverse law students is a good start, we seek to scale this program to dramatically strengthen the diversity pipeline.
